Abstract
The observations were made during the 1964 as a part of the epidemiological studies on the malaria situation in a confirmed malarious area and in a presumed malaria free area. Detaied studies were made to obtain a better understanding of the difference of the normal behavior of the vector mosquito particularly with regards to their feeding habit in the above mentioned two areas and of the response of the vector mosquito to DDT application in a sprayed area. And the following results were obtained.
1) The following four species of Anopheles were collected during 1964; A. koreicus koreicus Yamada et, Watanabe, 1918, A. sineroides Yamada, 1925, A. sinensis Wiedemann, 1825 and A. yatsushiroensis Miyaoaki 2 951, The last species, thusfar only recorded in Japan, was found in Korea for the first time during this year.
2) ) In the confirmed malarious area, the population density abruptly increased from the beginning of June tid reached the peak in August, whereas in the presumed malaria free area the density sharply decreased in This is mainly due to the difference in the agriculturual methods applied in the two areas.
3) The nighttime cow biting collection proved to be the most sensitive and effective method for measuring the density of A. sinensis. ,
4) No significant reduction of the density of A. sinensis was noticed in the sprayed area.
5) The biting habit and activity of A. sinensis in the presumed malaria free area and in the confirmed malarious area were found to be quite different. It seems that in the latter area A. sinensis is predominantly zoophilic, wheras in the former area A. sinensis feeds both on man and on cows. In this area it is assumed that A. sinensis is forced to bite man due to a shortage of the cow as a bait.
